Description

In Nepal, the “mask of protection” is the face of a Garuda-child called Chhepu. He was one among the three brothers, Garuda, Chhepu and Hitimanga. Nepali Mythos further believes that among the aquatic animals Chhepu is the most powerful.
The Garuda is a race of large bird-like creature, or humanoid bird that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Garuda is the Hindu name for the constellation Aquila. Garuda is a symbol of overwhelming strength and courage.
A Hitimanga means “sea dragon” or “water-monster”. It has the lower jaw of a crocodile, the trunk of an elephant, the tusks and ears of a wild boar, the darting eyes of a monkey, the mane of a horse, the scales and the flexible body of a fish, the paws of a lion, and the swirling tailing feathers of a peacock.
